Question

My 9 year old chihuahua has a patch of fur missing in a ring around her tail and also to the side of her belly. There is no sore, just missing fur. She has no fleas. The only thing I can think of is that she is allergic to the grass because she scratches everytime she walks in it, but that does not explain the missing fur on the tail. Is she okay? Should I take her to a vet?

Hi,

Very often patchy fur loss as you describe, is caused by a fungal skin infection called ringworm. This needs to be positively diagnosed by the vet in person, after examining these areas under a special light.

If you feel your dog is experiencing an allergic reaction to the grass or perhaps something used to 'treat' the grass, the vet needs to test her for allergies, as well.
