Question

1972 chevy truck compression check all cyl above 145 to 165 fuel pressure fine, timing 8 degrees, runs fine when warmed up. to start have to floor pedal. smoke out driver side tail pipe, crank for a few minutes before stays running. rough idle till warm then runs.

Already Tried:
flooring pedal till start. checked compression not great but hasnt changed in the last month. fuel pressure was fine last checked, plugs look ok, carb is new, ran from california to south dakota fine last few days started hard start. smoke out of one side of exhaust untill warmed up.

no, brand new carb clean as a whistle.

what color is the smoke out the one pipe..is it more blue or real black?how much oil does it use?has this carb always ran well?

not black more blueish not white. probably oil. has always used oil. after run from cal to south dakota uses a little more. the carb was purchased in cal for the trip to south dakota vacuum was hooked up wrong went to napa and was corrected couldnt climb a mountain the way it was hooked up wrong. when at higher altitudes coming east was hard to start. i thought it might be the diaphram on thedistributor. it has electronic ignition. couple months in south dakota has been ok just till this week.

i think the problem is the oil sealson the valves,,after it sits for a while the cylinders on the side that smoke get oil in them ,,causeing the cylinders not to fire well untill it has run a while and burns the oil out

yes i know that there is a leak, what does that mean in terms of repair a whole top end rebuild or just a valve job any ideas?

i would think to really fix it, you may want to do a complete head job and rering job. but i think you can get by with maybe replacing the valve stem seals. with proper tools this could be done with the heads on the engine.
