Question

Hi, I've got a chicken with bumblefoot, and am about to purchase Doxycycline tablets, but am unsure how to give a chicken a tablet. Do I mix with water? How much?

Already Tried:
Haven't tried anything, but the foot is clearly swollen on the pad and it only just happened today. Images match bumblefoot, but I haven't been able to examine it yet. I plan to do so tomorrow morning. The flock has been free ranging and I have a feeling she scratched her foot on something.

Hi-

If it is bumble foot, then the dose is 25-50 mg/kg daily orally in a solution of water or 1000mg of food. I would be cautious in claiming bumble foot in only one day of occurence.

I would sooner treat the wound topically with epsom salt water soaks twice daily for a couple of days than jump on the wagon and dose the whole bird with an antibiotic that may taint the meat or make the bird sick.

If it is simple, the bird should recover nicely with topical therapy. Bumble foot generally develops over days, not suddenly.

I hope this is helpful.

Please push ACCEPT and leave positive feedback.

Thanks!
