Question

My cat is vomiting yellow bile. He's 17 years old, diabetic, now is listless and is having trouble walking. I am afraid to take him to the vet because it will be too traumatic for him. Is there anything I can do at home for him?

Already Tried:
Chicken broth, beef broth, cat milk -- he doesn't care for those now. I've also tried rubbing a little maple syrup in his mouth. He is drinking a little bit of water. He's not eating today. He's also having some urine accidents.

Right now he's not eating. As I said, we rubbed some maple syrup in his mouth and he's drinking water. He's been like this yesterday and today. The day before that he was eating a little bit.

He is not taking insulin.

Accepted Answer

Dear Franny,

I am so sorry your boy is not feeling well.

He may be dehydrated or hypoglycemic. He could also have a urinary tract infection.

Since he is diabetic we cannot give him pedialyte. Try the water from a can of tuna or salmon. Offer whole milk.

Cats are attracted to smelly foods - the stronger the better. If he wants tuna, give it to him.You can also try fancy feast, clam juice or baby food.

human baby food in meat flavours (check that there are no onions or garlic in the ingredients) and mix that with warm water and offer that, or syringe it in little bits into your cat's mouth. Beech Nut makes a line of baby food that has nothing but meat (beef, chicken, turkey or veal) in it. Here's a link: http://www.beechnut.com/Our%20Baby%20Food/Results.asp If you cannot find this, you could find another meat baby food - just read the label carefully to be sure there are no onions, onion powder, garlic, or garlic powder in it.

.

If he refuses to eat and continues with these symptoms, I feel you do need to have a vet see him.He may need to start insulin.

He should also be checked for:

I hope he feels better very soon.

Sincerest best wishes,

Terri
