Question

I have a 12 year old Persian Cat that has upper respiratory problems. We were living in Hawaii and she was fine. But as soon as we moved to Connecticut she started sneezing with discharge. (At the same time my husbands allergies were really flared up). So I thought maybe she also has allergies. But the vet gave her Clavamox to clear up any secondary bacterial infections. But even after the Clavamox was gone she is still sneezing with discharge. I've read that I can give her a very small dose of childrens Benedryl. (She's 10 lbs). Do you think this would be the best course of action to see if allergies might be the problem? Or should I go back to the vet and ask if maybe we should try steroids or allergy shots? Or do you think it could be something else since there seems to be a lot of discharge? She seems to feel fine, just as active and lively. And she doesn't seem to be having any more breathing problems than she normally does as a Persian cat!

Hi there,

Is the mucus colored?

How long since you moved?

What does she eat?

Does she have a brachycephalic (flat) face?

Thanks,

Terri

Hi Terri,

Her mucus is yellow. We've been here for about 3 months. She finished the Clavamox about 2 weeks ago. Her eatting habbits haven't changed. She eats IAMS proactive health indoor weight and hairball care (what she's always eatten). And yes, she has an EXTREMELY flat face.

Dear Caqndice,

I am so sorry your baby is not feelinng well.

Persians with flaat faces are more prone to upper respiratory infections. They are usually viral but colored mucus indicates a bacterial issue which should respond to antibiotics so a rescipt of clavamox is a good idea.

Stress from moving is another factor that can bring on a URI or cat flu.

Dry food is not best for cats and can actually cause sneezing and allergies.

These brands below, are well-recommended and contain nothing artificial, plus, contain meat as the first, or within the first three ingredients:

Wellness (http://www.oldmotherhubbard.com/

Felidae (http://www.canidae.com/

Innova (http://www.naturapet.com/display.php?d=inn-home

Newman's Own Organics (http://www.newmansownorganics.com/pet/home/

Natural Balance (http://www.naturalbalanceinc.com/catformulas/NB_CatCanned.html

She can have an OTC called clortrimeton which is better than benedryl for cats- a quarter tablet every 12 hours if she is congested.

You can also take her in a steamy bathroom where you have run a hot shower to break it up.For teary eyes get Terramycin ointment. some pet supplies have it but call first or order from http://www.revivalanimal.com/

Since she developed any colored mucus that means the infection has turned bacterial and will respond to an antibiotic. Some vets script one even if it is viral to prevent secondary infections like pneumonia.

Please let me know how she is feeling. If you get worried I will always be here to help further.

I hope she feels better very soon.

Very sincerely,

Terri
