Question

Hi, we have a Landrover Defender which is 4 years old and has 23000 km on the clock and has rarely be used offroad. The gearbox siezed up while driving and we couldn't put the car into gear. It has had to have a new gearbox. Do you think this is unusual?

Answer

It doesnt sound unusual i have had axles , Transmissons and all different components. with alot less miles break. When dealing with a component with moving parts , somtimes they fail. And this sounds like one. If this answered your question please accept if need more info please ask

Ok, so anything with a moving part can break. However, this is a car marketed as one of the toughest in the world. It seems extremely odd that this would be "normal" and not a manufacturing fault. Given we have never towed with the car, and have not driven it badly, what could cause a gearbox to collapse this quickly? How long do you think the average gearbox should last? I realise some go on a very long time, but what would you consider a normal range (in terms of km's driven). If you owned this car, would you accept that it must be your fault that it happened and not a manufacturing problem?

Answer

Definately not your fault. And I didnt say that this IS normal But it does happen. WHy did the place that replaced say why they think it failed. ? 14,000 miles isnt very much I agree nut i have replaced Engines with 1,000 miles. not anyones fault. Cant really speculate on the average life cause they vary.

Its out of warrenty, due to the age, so the dealer wont pay the bill to fix it and neither will the manufacturer, Landrover. Was a $5,000 bill to fix it. They say the synchomesh was heavily worn, but that is impossible given the use its had. There must have been something wrong with the way it was working to cause it. It also caused a major safety issue as we were going down a steep hill in the rain and dark when it failed and none of the gears would work. Luckily we were fine, but shaken. We are in New Zealand and have a Consumer Guarantees Act that may cover us as the car is not "fit for purpose". Will just have to wait and see if we can reclaim the money. I just wanted to see what a mechanic would say about the situation.

Thanks for your replies

I have a idea that may work for you i see it work at my dealership all the time. Go to your dealer ship ask the Service manager for the Dealer reps # that you want to speak to him. The dealer rep is kinda like his boss. and he oversees a few dealers . I dont know what he is called where u are . but we call him our GM REP. Get in touch with their REP and discuss problem He is more likely to help you heis more concerened with customer satisfaction and Manager wants money
