Info Request

Thanks for the question XXXXXXXXXX.

I will be very pleased to try and answer your question but to enable me to do so with accuracy I need to know a little bit more information, so first can you tell me :

1. Is the abdominal distension sudden onset now or has it been coming on over a period of a few days.

This is just a information request for which you have not been charged, I am online at present. I will answer your question shortly after receiving your reply.

He does get a couple of rawhide chew treats during the day

Thanks for the quick reply,

I think on balance you would be better to see an ER vet now, where a dog has a distended abdomen there is some degree of chance that it may be developing bloat which is a very serious disease. While your description is not typical this would not be a disease you would want to miss.

If this is not a developing early bloat the abdominal distension would most likely still be the clue to what is going on. You see a dog has a bloated belly is always a cause for concern as this could be fluid build up in the abdominal cavity. The term for fluid build up in the abdomen is ascities by the way. If I wanted to list the possible common causes of ascities that I know of in the dog it would include :

A. Heart disease.

B. Liver disease including cancers.

C. Kidney disease, there are various forms.

D. Feline infectious peritonitis

E. Bleeding into the abdominal cavity, not likely in your case because the fluid is straw coloured.

F. Protein losing enteropathies.

Unfortunately there is no possible scope for home remedies so accordingly the only advice I can give you is that you should have your vet check your dog over sooner rather than later.

If I have not answered your question fully enough or if you would like to ask more I will be on line for the next hour or so and I will be pleased to discuss your question further.
