Question

We have a Norcold 121X double door refrigerator in our 2007 Itasca motorhome. On our first trip in 2007, we had a problem with the door alarm going off. We would securely close the door and for apparently no reason, moving or stationary, the door would open enough to activate the alarm. We would then close the door again to shut off the alarm. Our dealer fixed it on our return and we have not had a problem for a year and a half. Now we are on a cross-country in August 2009 when the problem begins again, exactly the same symptoms we experienced in 2007. Since it is now out of warranty and not wanting to pay a service technician $110+/hour to diagnose the problem, I contacted the dealer who fixed it the first time to see if they had a record of the repair and the part that needed to be replaced. They have no record of the repair. I contacted Winnebago Service and they said the door probably needed to be shimmed. Can you tell me what to do at this point?

Answer

Hello,
HERE is the service manual to your fridge. It will come in handy now that you are out of warranty.
The double door units are notorious for this problem due to the weight of the doors and the "always on the move" factor. I believe that if you take a framing square to the door(s), you will see the problem. The droop just enough to cause the issue.
There is a shim kit available which reinforces the doors to prevent this from re-occurring. I am not around that information at this time but will look it up later this morning and get back with you.
The service manual covers nearly everything there is to know about the unit and has electrical drawings and trouble shooting procedures.
I will get back with you later.
Thanks for the question,
Ronnie

Answer

Hello,

I spoke with my Norcold rep this morning and he tells me that the problem with the 1210 series doors is hinge distortion. The 1200 series actually have problems with the door droop.

He stated that dealers usually bend the hinges back to position and that there are replacements available that are built much better and will not distort like the originals.. He was going to check on the part number and availabilty and call me back. That was the last I heard from him today. I will call back in the morning to see if he has the information and get back with you.. I apologize for your wait.

Thank you,

Ronnie

I am okay with this answer for the moment. I look forward to hearing more information about the new hinges.

Answer

Good Morning,

What they probably adjusted before was the strike plate. Inspect it and look for wear as it holds the door latches.

The new bottom hinges are Norcold part #'s 628946 and 628945. You will need one of each. Also, you will need two door pins. They are Norcold part # 61550722.

If the strike plate is worn, its part # is 628473.

This should take care of the problem as they are built much better than the originals.

After installation, measure the gap between the doors at the top and bottom. They should be the same distance. The top hinges never seem to be an issue since the only have the weight of the much smaller freezer doors.

What happens is the doors drop enough that the catch sits in the strike plate at a slight angle. This causes them to pop open with a slight jar. They need to remain at right angle to the strike plate to stay latched. With the hinges bent slightly downward, it makes this happen.and you only have so much room to lower the strike plate.

Shimming the door by placing nylon spacers over the bottom hinge pins works but it is not the correct answer since it will just keep on going down until it kicks the bottom of the door out which breaks the seal.

Let me know if this helps.

Thank you,

Ronnie

Can I assume I will have to order these parts through a local authorized service center or, is there a more direct way to order parts from Norcold? Thanks for your help so far and I am prepared to accept your response.

Accepted Answer

Hello,

Any Norcold dealer can order them for you. I get parts through a Norcold Distributor but since I do not buy ten thousand dollars worth of refrigerators, I pay the same price that you would through any dealer. One place that I have used HERE will order them or may have them in stock. The last Norcold hinges that we bought were around $14.00 each. Not too bad considering the price of most of their OEM parts.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Thank you,

Ronnie
