Question

i have a 1998 mercedes benz vito van petrol that wont start.i have had a mechanic look at it and he thinks it might be the fuel pump. is this a common problem and is there anything we can do to checkas a new fuel pump is very expensive.are there any alternatives.

Hello Pete and Welcome to justanswer...

In your additional info - you say you have power to the pump ... which is somethng I would have suggested to check - so thats good..

If you have power to the pump and its not running / pumping - ( take the pipe off to check - but make sure you dont get any sparks ! ) ...then if its not flowing fuel through the outlet - the pump must have failed..

If you do get fuel through - but not up at the engine - then you must have a blockage en route.. usually a clogged fiuel filter .. so bear that in mind..in case...

So just check through as above and then you will be sure ;)

Not if you are getting power to the pump no... as I was saying ...if you test it per above - that will determine it for sure ;)

I know what you mean - and price of pumps etc... but that test is definitive..
