Question
I'm about to purchase a 2005 Chevy Avalanche 4x2 1500 with the 5.3L engine, Model CC15936. The build sheet shows it does not have the Z82 trailering package, the vehicle does not have a hitch on it, yet it does have the 7-pin wiring at the rear. The dealer is insisting all Avalanche models, whether they have the Z82 package or not all came out of the factory the same, that no additional auxiliary transmission cooler (as included as part of the Z82 package) is required for towing. Since I will be towing a 6000 lb travel trailer with this Av I'd like to confirm if this is true or not? Thanks!

Thanks Joe but what I'd like to know more specifically is whether what the Chevy dealer is telling me about the Avalanche is true or not. If I were buying this vehicle new I'd have ordered it with the Z82 trailering package which according to the Avalanche's RPO spec sheet includes the hitch platform, 7-pin wiring, trailer brake pre wiring harness, 7-way to 4-way adapter, and an auxiliary transmission cooler. Since this particular Avalanche doesn't have the hitch platform that leads me to believe it also does not have this auxiliary transmission cooler ... the dealer says it does and says all 2005 Avalanche 1500 models came out of the factory with the same equipment regardless of whether it was ordered with the Z82 trailering package or not, and that the trailering package only really added the hitch platform. His argument is that because the vehicle does have the 7-pin plug at the back that it likewise also has the auxiliary transmission cooler. To prove his point he showed me a small cooler sitting in front of the main radiator, on the driver's side of the vehicle, saying that was the auxiliary transmission cooler, but I think he's mistaken ... I think that's in fact the power steering cooler and not the auxiliary transmission cooler. If you can tell me where this auxiliary transmission cooler is located on an Avalanche then I could verify for myself whether it has one or not. If the build sheet showed this vehicle did have the Z82 package I'd have not given it another thought and just started towing our trailer with it, just as I did with our previous 2006 Silverado which did have the trailering package and in three years of towing with it I never had any transmission overheating problems at all. If I can't get a definitive answer on this then I guess my only recourse is to take the vehicle to a transmission shop and have an additional cooler installed, no matter whether the dealer insists it already has an aux cooler or not.
