Question

One of my cats has started throwing up. It's frothy and yellow.   He's also not acting like his normal self.   He usually follows me where ever I go; now he's staying in mainly just 2 spots in the house. I try not to take him out of the house unless it is needed as he is very skiddish and a trip to the vet takes him over a month to start coming out of hiding.

Nothing at the moment. I have seen him drinking water and he will eat cat treats.   We keep a bowl of food out for our 4 cats at all times.   I have seen where someone was throwing up for 2 days, didn't see who was doing it until last night.

He's neutered. He's 5 years old (roughly). He was found in Maine in the middle of a busy highway during an October cold snap. He was thought to be around 3 months old when we adopted him from the vets office that day (I worked with the lady who found him in the road) When we brought him back after 3 weeks of care and feeding, they re-estimated his age at around 1 year and said we could spay him then. He's always been very skiddish (sp) and I think he has vision problems as his doesn't seem to be able to see or focus on things unless they are very close to him. He doesn't like to be held or cuddled...but does like affection and to walk and lay on me as long as he's not held. He hasn't been doing that or following me as normal for about 4 days. I haven't seen him eat in that time; but he has taken treats from me.

Answer

There are a couple things that may be haooening to your guy. One is an obstruction from hair balls which will cause him to feel nauseous and not feel good. The best thing for you to do is to give him the hair ball treatment for a couple days every 4-6 hrs. This is a product called Laxatone which can be purchased at any pet store.

This could also be due to a urinary tract infection which can be common in these guys, It will cause him to vomit and be very uncomfortable. Monitor his use of the litter box. If you see anything unusual, you will have to have your vet examine him.

Good Luck!!

One thing has been different in our cats routine in the last week. One night last week, a mouse was found by them and killed. One of the cats ate on the mouse a little bit and then brought what they'd eaten back up. Since he's the only one acting different, I'm wondering if he was the one who ate it and possible if this is somehow affecting him.

Was he's throwing up reminds me of bile. Does that go with the hairball or UTI possibility?

Accepted Answer

Well, this could be a partial obstruction due to the mice parts. This also is fairly common in hunters. The Laxatone will help with this also. I would definitely try this first since you do not see any evidence of a urinary tract infection.
