I have a minature schnauzer that has developed over the last couple of years a bad skin problem. I was told to give him fish oil pills daily and we have changed to food to Science Diet for Sensitive Skin. We been on this daily treatment for 10 months...it has helped but he still has dry skin and breaks out in sores. He also lies around licking his paws alot. I was told this has to do with allergies.
I had a vet once say something about giving him Benadryl on a daily basis but, it was a passing comment when discussing other issues and I don't remember the dosage or anyother info beside that.

Do you have any information that can help relieve his suffering.

Fish oil can help make sensitive skin less reactive to allergens. Benadryl has been shown not to be effective for most dogs because dogs don't have much histamine in their skin. So an antihistamine will not be expected to so much. For dogs that lick their feet because of allergies, we use steroids. Ask your vet if your dog can get a steroid shot. If he gets relief from the itching, the vet may prescribe tablets. In addition, there may be an infection in the skin with a yeast or a bacteria. That would need to be treated in addition to treating the itching. Frequent bathing really helps allergic dogs, too.
