Question

My minature poodle cross has a few problems. When he sleeps, he leaks a little, this has been a problem for a little while but my vet never got it properly diagnosed. Because he leaks he licks his groin area and because of he excessive saliva his skin has darkened. Latley the area has been secreting a red oily discharge which he still licks turning the fur around his mouth a shade of pink/red. He is 7 1/2 years old, been desexed and chipped. Help!

Answer

I have 2 suggestions for you to talk to your vet about. First, you can use phenylpropanolamine for the urine leakage. This drug actually constricts the urethral muscle do the urine cannot leak out. It is difficult even to initiate urination with this drug. Second, if he is very itchy see if the dog can have a steroid shot. That will take away the itching if it is an allergy or a chemical irritation.

Thanks for the information. Can you tell me what could be the cause of the leak? Is it medical or could it actually be that he is lazy? And why would he be now be having a reddish discharge?

Accepted Answer

If the urine is normal, then it is probably just a weakness in the urethra. Sometimes licking will change the color of the hair around the sheath of the penis.
