Question

What are the rules about using a competitor's name in advertising?

Answer

You can use a competitor's name as comparison, such as "cheaper than X's advertised price" and that is considered fair use. However, you cannot make disparaging or untrue comments about a competitor using their name in the ad. It is known as comparative advertising, such as "Tide is cheaper than Wisk" As long as it truthful and used for comparison it is fair use of their name.
