Question

My 9 month old male Doberman has swollen lymph nodes on this throat. He has not been very interested in food and has spells of excessive drooling.   They do not seem to hurt him however the rear part of his jaw is slightly swollena and does seem tender. his energy levels are fairly normal no gum discoloration.
My vet put him on 10 days of Amoxicillin but it did nothing. None of the other lymph nodes are swollen, so I think we can rule out lymphoma. Please help

Answer

<p>Hi,</p><p>I'm sorry to hear that your Dobie is having this issue. Drooling along with swollen glands often indicates infection. While the antibiotics did not help, this might indicate a dental issue, salivary gland cyst, or reaction (can range for problem with an insect bite or sting, applied flea medications etc). These should be investigated further by your vet. Some cancers can also cause these symptoms, however this is not particularly common in dogs this young. Consider picking up a canned food like Hill's I/D and an over the counter paste called Nutri Cal (calorie suppliment for dogs when they are not feeling well). You can also offer a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice, chicken broth without onoins and/or chicken baby food without onions to hlep him heat. I hope he's feeling better soon.</p><p>Please click "ACCEPT" or if you need more information "REPLY"</p>

You mentioned "applied Flea medications. I just applied his flea and tick on Sept 1st. How could these be related?

Thank you for the answer.

Answer

Hi,
Some dogs can have reactions to flea and tick medication.   These can run the gambet in symptoms with some reporting swollen glands and drooling (generally soon after application). For example, theres a website www.hartzvictims.org in which indivduals report negative reactions there dogs have taken from flea products. If you suspect this may be the culprit, let your vet know and also call the manufactuer of the product. Your vet may need to put your Dobie on an oral antihistamine and /or oral steroid. I hope he's doing better soon.

it sounds like that may not be it. since it has been nearly 3 weeks and he just started drooling about 3 days ago.

Does the fact that the glands have been swollen for about 3-4weeks, but he just started drooling about 3 days ago help you to solve this?

Answer

Hi,
I would lean toward a cyst on the gland or infection of it since this progressed over the course of weeks. In some cases, a stronger antibiotic or longer duration may be needed. You may want to ask your vet to do a culture as this can help to pinpiont the best medication route to take (for example, fungal infections may also cause swelling but would be treated with a different medication). I hpoe he's doing better soon.

<p>Hi,</p><p>I'm glad I could help! If this is able to be pinpinted soon, look into your local teaching vet hospital (state U etc) as they tend to be great with issues like this. I hope he's feeling better soon, they're a great breed.</p>
