Question

my beagle is 13. It appears her chest is getting bigger, almost as if she is gaining weight but in her chest. I have also noticed her breathing is heavier and sounds as if she is wheezing sometimes.   What should I do. I am trying to avoid taking her into the vet because of the expense.

Hi,
I'm sorry to hear that your girl is having this issue. While older dogs can gain weight in what seems like odd places, an increase in cheest size may indicate a fluid build up, heart or lung issue. In many cases medication and dietary change can get this under control. I can understand wanting to avoid the bill of the vet, however for this, it's best to err on the side of caution and have her seen. You may want to contact your local SPCA as they often have, or can refer one to, sliding scale (pay only what one can) clincis. Just exaplain your situation.
