Question

We have a 2 yr beagal that we have tried a med size bark collar on for over 6 months and she just barks through the shock. She tends to bark at just about eveything people walking by, birds, the wind... We recieved a complaint letter and do not want to have to get ried of her but we need suggestions how we can stop or at least control this behavior. She is an inside/outside dog in a balanced home. I am considering debarking her but I dont know if that is the right thing to do. Any suggestions? Thanks

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear that your girl is having this issue. There are a few things you can try to help her get past this. First, there is a product called "Bark Stop" that you may want to use. It emits an ultrasonic noise that deters dogs from barking and often works very well. Next, you'll want to work on her lifestyle. Since the beagle is a working breed, they often need a "job" to keep busy; when they do not have this, they can become loud or destructive. Consider joining an obedience club, agility club etc with her. It will keep her active both mentally and physically. One can be found through the AKC site at http://www.akc.org/ Third, try working on behavioral modification with her. The "quiet" command can be a great tool. The following site explains how along with some other tips (modify the barking at passerby with barking in your yard/at your house). You can read more here: http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/our_pets_for_life_program/dog_behavior_tip_sheets/barking.html

Finally, speak with your vet. In some cases, medication can be used to help get the behavior under control (for example, an anti anxiety med if seperation anxiety is suspected). This is a good resource to use if needed as opposed to the surgical options. I hope she's doing better with this soon.

Please click "ACCEPT" or if you need more information "REPLY"
