Question

OK.... a friend got an amazing answer here to his lawn mower problem so now I'll try. I have a flagstone walk and the cement is falling into pieces... it was put in a long time ago. I'm not sure whether to have the flagstone reset or to put in a walk with pavers of some sort. What are the ups and downs of either one? I'm in New Jersey. We do get snow and ice in the winter. I'm paralyzed not knowing what to do and I do nothing as it falls apart more and more.

Thank you for using Just Answer!

Flagstone has the advantage of coming a large variety of colors, shapes, sizes, textures and finishes. They can provide a design of different patterns and provide a more natural look. Some of the disadvantages are that they can be more expensive and the cement will eventually break apart just like you are experiencing. A big contributor to this is the seasonal freeze and thaw that your part of the country experiences.

Brick pavers also provide you with some flexibility as far as design and color. Pavers are more durable and can withstand much heavier loads in comparison to flagstone. Also is a paver becomes damaged it is a very easy repair. All you do is lift up the damaged paver and put a new one in its place. Pavers are also installed over a bed of levelling sand that will not be as vulnerable to freeze and thaw. There is no cement used that will eventually crack and break off.

Some disadvantages of the pavers are that they can be susceptible to erosion of the sand and have some shifting or sinking in areas. They also will require more maintenance because weeds will grow between the pavers in areas.

If you are having a hard time making a decision it will be worth you time to go to a company that does the installation of both flagstone and pavers. They can provide you with a design and theme for both.

Feel free to post any follow-up questions you may have.

Thanks Jay for replying so quickly and such detail! If I have a further question about a separate home improvement issue (which I do), do I go in and put through another question? This is the first time I've used this site.
