Question

Problem: 2001 Silverdo 4x4 with "Service 4wd" displayed on dash. The indicator light comes on and the truck stays in 2wd. Then once I shut the truck off and turn back on the 2wd/4wd switch does not light up except for a small blink when you initially turn the key. Other than that the switch does nothing what so ever and it feels like the truck goes into 4wd hi. I've solved the problem by disconnecting the battery overnight and reconnecting but both times I've done this the problem reoccured. I have read posts that say to replace the switch. I have a friend with a scanner but there were no codes relating to the transfer case or any of the sensors. I cleaned some grounds behind the drivers side tire and no luck. Should I replace the switch? Or does it sound like there is something else wrong?

Optional Information

Year : 2001
Make : Chevrolet
Model : Silverado
Engine : 5.3

Already Tried:
Resoldered the connections within the switch, but none of them appeared cracked or faulty. Cleaned grounds behind the drivers side wheel. Pulled the ATC fuse under the hood and pulled the 4wd fuse in the dash, waited 30 seconds, put back in and tried again, problem still present.

Answer

YOu are probably looking at a switch in the dash or a shifter motor on the side of the transfer case.

From everything I've read online I kind of figured it was either the switch or the one of the shift motors...anyway to nail one of the two down? I was leaning more toward the switch because when the "service 4wd" light initially comes on it stays in 2wd but then when I turn the truck off the light stays on but it feels like the truck goes into 4wd, but there are no lights on within the switch panel. So if it can change the gears but the switch does nothing was thinking it was the switch. Or is it possible that the motor has an intermittent problem?

Answer

Majority of the time its the switch by the symptoms you describe i would change the switch

If I take off the motor from the tranfer case can I hook it up directly to 12 volts to rule that out as the problem?

Answer

I have never powered up a transfer case motor that way i dont see why not but i think it would be wiser to have the truck scanned with a good scanner and see if there are trouble codes first

What's a good scanner cost? My friend scanned it but I'm pretty sure his scanner was around $300. I know some scanners could be up to $4800. Is a $300 scanner capable of pulling a C0327, C0550, DTC B2725? That's another reason I was leaning toward the switch, the scanner didn't pull any codes. My friend used his scanner on my corvette and it was pulling old and new (I know there's a technical name for old and new can't think of it now) codes from all of the different modules in the car which makes me think it's a pretty good scanner.

a good scanner is over 3000 dollars i have little knowledge of cheap scanners i do own a cheap actron that i use at car auctions due to its size but you will need to read the scanners capabilitys

Well it sounds like I am going to start by replacing the switch...maybe when I go to chevy dealer near me I will ask them how they charge to scan. I'm thinking it will be $65 just to scan and I think the switch is only $50. I'm not crazy about just replacing parts but from what you have said and everything I've read it sounds like the switch is my best bet. Thanks for your help.
