Question

I installed tongue and grrove laminate flooring in my home about seven years ago. I would now like to install vinyl plank flooring. My question is do I need to rip up the existing laminate floor or can I instal the vinyl planks directly on top of the existing laminate floor? Ripping out the the laminate would not be too much trouble, however I am concerned that the subfloor would not be as good an underlayment as the laminate floor.

Thank you for using Just Answer!

You do not have to remove the laminate flooring and you are correct that it will provide a better subfloor as an underlayment. Vinyl plank flooring requires a very smooth and clean surface to have a nice finished look. Be sure that all dirt and debris are cleaned off of the laminate prior to installing the vinyl planks.
