Question
George, my one and a half year old cat had a swollen pad for a long time. then it started to become a open soar that produced some puss, turned black and began to heal. then the whole thing started over. several times. all of the sudden he developed the same kind of soar on the top of his paw and once that started to heal he developed one two toes over. it doesn't seem to bother him too much, he uses his paw without limping but lately I have the feeling he is not feeling well overall and seems depressed. I will take him to the vet if I need to but my budget is so tight, I can barely afford to feed George. Any idea what might be wrong with him? Regine

Hello Regine:
Poor George! Has he been declawed? I have seen recurrent wounds in cats that have been declawed where the claw actually begins growing back and causes a wound like you describe.
Another possibility would be a foreign body of some sort that keeps causing an infection.
I think you have tried the "home remedy" and it doesn't sound too effective. It may be time to have a veterinarian check him out.
He may just need a good course of antibiotics, but if he is run down and not feeling well, they may recommend lab work and/or xrays to
furthur evaluate him. In the meantime, keeping the wound(s) clean
with soap and water once or twice /day is a good idea. Wounds on the paws are difficult to keep clean, especially with a cat in the litter box. YOu may consider using a paper based litter ("Yesterday's News")
to prevent litter from getting into the wound. If he will let you
soak his paw in warm water with epsom salts, that is also good at
drawing out the infection.
Good luck to you and George! - Dr. T

DR. T, I wanted you to know how much appreciated your caring answer to my question about my cat George.I got more help from you through one note via e-mail then from the vet we went to and was in and out of the office in a flash. You were right. George needed several antibiotics and even surgery to remove swollen mass from his paw even so it did not seem to have been caused by a forgein body. Maybe it was a spiderbite, the vet assistant said. George went for his follow-uo this morning and was declaired healthy. One last small hole is remaining in his paw but closing up slowly and all he needs is to grow his fur back that was shaven off. I thank you so much for your service. How funny though I should get a note from you today when I sat down to write to YOU!Thank you so, so much!! I wish you could be my vet!
