Question

I found 4 kittens in an old doghouse on the back of our property. 2 were already dead and the third died later. The 4th is lively and wants to live. She is about 3 weeks old and is eating well. Problem is, I found an ear packed full of maggots. I cleaned it out. Its red and has a little clear seepage in it now. I also cleaned out several maggots from the eye on the same side by flushing it with clear water and kind of squeezing and picking them out. Problem is that there are at least 2 more in there that I haven't been able to get out. I also tried using Visine which seemed to bring them to the surface but I couldn't get hold of them or get them flushed out. The kitten is wiggling a lot and I'm sure his eye is a bit sore. I believe the eye to be blind since it has a bluish cast to it. He keeps it closed most of the time. Do you have ideas for me?

Answer

Hello there,

Sorry to hear about the other kitties. What you could try to do to get all the worms out, is use hydro peroxide. This should flush them out. However if doing this is not enough, you should take her to your vet so he can have this remove.

As for the eye, is possible that is blind, since there is a canal that communicates the eye from the ear, and if the maggots were able to get to the eye, they could have damage it severely.

A closer look to the eye will confirm this.

I hope this helps

The peroxide won't damage the eye or surrounding tissues?

Answer

No it wont, this would be safe to use. In any case would kill any anaerobic bacteria. And help any foreign object to get out.

Ok - it was helpful. I got one out - there are more though. I expect I won't be able to get them all out. Is this something that she will have to be 'put down' for? Unfortunately to take her to the vet tomorrow - it will have to be afternoon and it will cost at least $38 just to be seen. Is this something the vet himself would be able to get all of them out?

Answer

Definitely NO, this is treatable. You could try to keep on cleaning the ear with the peroxide. The vet should be able to take them all out. But give it a try yourself if you´ll like, but if you can´t I recommend you that trip to the vet

How do I know if I got them all? Is there a way to tell?

Posted by Santiago Soto 63 days and 12 hours ago.

Answer

Not by any procedure done by yourself. The only way, is after more washes, and no more maggots come out. Our she doesn´t complain.

Or have you vet check her as well.

Just a little more and I will pay you.... about the ear - its red and swollen... of course at her age the ear shouldn't be open anyway, I don't think... but do I understand that I should just keep trying to put a little peroxide into it too? "Is that right?

Answer

Yes, you should keep cleaning the ear with peroxide. As far her ear be open or not. Their ear canal is always open. That´s why I concern about eye damage as well. But I think is worth trying.

The swelling of the ear should disappear within a few days.

I did accept when I was doing the last question. I'm sorry it didn't go thru. Maybe the vet would like to know that the kitten did die. I think it was just too much for him and he just was too stressed with me trying to get the maggots out of his little eye. Anyway, I do appreciate the help and know now how to handle this if it should ever happen again. I sure didn't mean to leave you without pay. For some reason it just must not have gone thru.

I checked my bank account and it did indeed go thru the account so I am sure you got paid. Again, thank you. This will be my last accounting to you. Don't bother to send any more notes to my e-mailbox. I will not answer them. You HAVE been paid as per agreement.
