Question

My cat is 23 years old. Recently, she has exhibited vast loss of hair on her belly near her hind legs and appears to have seizures (losing motion in hind legs), and then when this passes she seems okay. She is eating, drinking, eliminating waste normally. We introduced a new kitten and she became more active for a month, and now she is exhibiting the above symptoms. She has begun to bite the hairless patch, and infection is probably certain. I want to know if we should take her to the vet and put her down, or might there be some condition where recovery is possible.

Thank you.

Answer

Hello there,

In a cat this age, the seizure activity may be result of a brain lesion. Treatment is not likely. The skin issue may get better with antibiotics, but cats this age heal very slowly. If she is eating and drinking normally, that is a positive sign. I would take her in with the thought that you might have to put her down and let your vet take a look at the skin before you make your decision.
