Question

My female cat has a cold, coughing, sneezing, temperature and can't breath through her nose comfortably. What can I give her to help her be more comfortable and help the cold go away. She is drinking water but has not eaten for about 36 hours.

Type of Animal: Cat
Gender: female

Already Tried:
1/2 baby aspirin. Small amount of crushed vit C in her food today. She tried a couple of licks and that was it.

Accepted Answer

Firstly, aspirin should never be given to cats. Cats are very sensitive to most human medicines. Secondly, vitamin C is not a needed nutrient for cats, so there is no benefit to supplementing with it.

Now, as to what can be done to help, you can try some nose drops such as Little Noses, which contains a decongestant known as Phenylephrine. This can be used for a day or two - but no longer - in order to prevent worsening of congestion. Also, you can run a hot shower and have her breathe in the steam to help loosen congestion. If you have a humidifier, that can be used as well.

Most colds in cats are viral, not bacterial, so often antibiotics are not needed. I usually recommend L-Lysine, an amino acid commonly available in drug stores. The usual amount is 125 mg twice a day, crushed in to the food. It can help fight some of the viruses that can affect cats.
