Question

I just bought a Maytag Electric Dryer model# MEDC400VW and they came and put it in and when you turn it on all it does is make a humming noise.
The bad part is I had bough an Admiral dryer about 8 months ago and it went out and they came out about 5 times and they replaced the motor, the timer and did something with the wiring and it all was under warranty, so they said it was the plug, we had an electrian come out and he said the plug was fine so that is when we got a new dryer and we put it in and the same thing is happening which is the humming sound. So I am wondering if maybe the voltage is not correct? but then again I would think the electrician would know that?

Answer

Hi

It is possible that the breaker or a connection in the circuit is bad.

When this happens the circuit could look fine when tested with out a load then has problem when a load is placed on the circuit.

If you have a volt meter we can check this out.

Okay, I do have a volt meter, however, I am at home and this is at a rental property, so if I go over there and check it, what am I looking for, will I get a reading or not get a reading?

Accepted Answer

In the back of the dryer where the cord enters, there is an access cover. Inside of that cover there will be a junction block with three connectors. The two outside terminals are 220v the middle is the neutral. Your voltage readings should be 220v between the two outside and 110v between either outside to the neutral. Do this with the dryer off then check it with the dryer on. If you notice one side dropping in power you either have a bad breaker or a loose connection.

Let me know how you make out.
