Question

I have a 1976 Chevy truck that keeps running the battery down. I have tried everything I know. It is not the alternater but sounds when not running before the battery dies like a motor is running. Do you know what it could be?

Answer

What did you use to check the alternator? A brand new battery dead after a 1/2 to 1 hour lunch? Sounds like you either have a major drain on that battery or its just a loose connection. If you have a 12 volt test light or voltmeter check the battery for a drain. Disconnect the negative battey cable and hook the neg test lead of test light or voltmeter to the neg battery post and the pos lead to the neg battery cable. Now with everything off and door and hood closed if it has a light there should be no light on test light or voltage on voltmeter. If it has a drain, disconnect the alternator wires at the alternator, then start pulling fuses 1 at a time untill the light goes out or voltmeter drops to 0. When it does look at that fuse and see what components are on that circuit and start testing them. First thing to do is put the fuse back in and hook up the battery and make sure everything on that circuit works, such as bulbs, etc.

I had already done all those things before I wrote. I just wanted to know if you had an answer to what else I could do.

Answer

Is the battery actually going dead after 1 hour or is it just hard cranking the starter? Maybe the starter is drawing too many amps.

Answer

What were the results of all your tests? How many amps or voltage is the alternator putting out. Is there a drain on the battery? Any trailer wiring harnesses recently installed that may be shorted out? Any radios or anything added to a hot power source?

Answer

So when you come back after 1 hour and the battery seems dead, do you have any lights? Do you check the battery right across the posts with a testlight or voltmeter? If it is going dead within 1 hour from a full charge then something big is either left on or there is a short.

It was a new battery and I did not have any lights. I know something is causing it to lose it charge that is the reason I am asking for help.

When you unhooked the negative battery cable and checked it for a drain what did it read on the voltmeter or did the 12 volt test light light?
