Question

I have a 99 chevy s-10 pick up, 4.3 liter v6. I'm having a hard start problem.
I have changed the plugs, wires, and cap. seems like a fuel problem. When I turn the key on
I can hear the pump, which stops after a few seconds. I also have noticed that when I turn the key off I can hear the fuel going back into the tank. I do not know what the fuel pressure is. After turning the engine over many times it will start, and seems to run just fine. When I turn it off and try again it will usually start rite back up, if it sits then I have the problem all over again. Does any know what is causing this problem and how to fix it.
Thanks

Accepted Answer

The fuel pump usually causes this problem, the problem is that the fuel pump will not make enough pressure for the first few cycles of the key.

My fuel pump is fairly new, about 1.5 years old. I don,t want to have to pay for another one if I can avoid it, Is there any other possible thing it might be. I have checked for pressure at the schader test valve, and no fuel is under pressure after it's been sitting for a while.

Accepted Answer

WIth these symptoms it is most likely a fuel pump or pressure regulator but since it eventually starts it is not likely the regulator, I would start by checking the actual pressure.
