Question

1989 C1500 pick-up. drove it in the yard, and would not start again. I checked out the battery, distributor module, and replaced coil. Battery power is getting to the coil, and getting battery power to the distributor from the wiresfrom the coil to the distributor. Put two different coils in from advanced auto. Would you have any suggestions? the truck turns over real good, just no spark from the coil.   I did the ohms test in the Haynes book for that truck, and all the readings were good.

Accepted Answer

Hello.

Your possible problems include, since you replaced the coil, cap, rotor, wires all that's left is...

Pickup coil/magnetized distributor shaft.

bad module

This is a basic ignition system. The computer is not needed to create spark. A good pick up coil and a new distributor shaft will produce over one volt of AC voltage at a normal cranking speed to tell the module when to ignite the coil.

Verify there is ignition power to the ignition coil and distributor during cranking. Use a test light from Battery positive to coil negative, check for a blinking test light while cranking. If the test light does not blink, disconnect the pickup coil from the module. Verify the pickup produces at least 500 mV of AC voltage during cranking. Use a volt meter set to AC volts . If it does not, replace the pick up coil and the distributor shaft. If it does, replace the module.
