I have mold growing behind my shower wall due to a leak. The leak has been fixed but the mold smell is real bad. How can I get rid of the mold without tearing out the shower/tub and wall?

Hi and thanks for using JustAnswer. The mold will remain active until the wall cavities have dried out. Unfortunately you can not dry out the cavities by blowing dry air into the cavities as this will sent mold spores everywhere. You can cut into the back side of the wall and apply mold killing agents. HomeDepot sells one. Put it in a tank sprayer with a brass wand, poke holes in the wall cavities large enough to insert and rotate the wand, and treat the cavities. Then plaster the small holes. A hole at 2, 4, and 6 feet should do it for an 8 foot high wall. Another option is to remove the drywall from the back of the wall, treat the wallboard the tiles are on, then install new mold resistant drywall-it contains silver. What ever you do be very careful not to disturb the mold in a way that sends it airborne, and wear a mask in case some gets airborne while spraying the cavity.

Some people are severly allergic to mold. If you or someone in your home is allergic, you should have a mold remediation company deal with this. Your home insurance will pay up to your mold damage limit in your policy.

I hope that this information was helpful to you.
