Question

I have a Peugeot 205 1.6 auto (1995, 85K miles) that somtimes won't start after a run when the engine is hot. It seems to be a random problem in that a couple of months can pass without fault or maybe it would do it a couple of times consecutively.

When you turn on the ignition switch the dash lights as normal and all electrics appear to be working. However, when you turn the key further to start the ignition absolutely nothing happens - no noise whatsoever. You then have to wait about 30 minutes and then the car will start first time as normal.

I have changed the crank sensor twice. I have changed the spark plugs. I have checked all electrical connections cleaned and lubricated with WD40. The Lamda sensor was replaced about 3 or 4 years ago. In all other respects the car is in excellent condition as far as I know and definately well looked after.

Answer

Hello and Welcome to justanswer..

From what you have described - if all the connections are definitely ok - including the battery terminal connections -as these can be very problematic on these.... then the problem is likely to be with the starter motor playing up now and then..

When the problem occurs - you need to be ready to check with a 12 v tester / light... connect to the smaller wire on the starter motor - this is the trigger wire... then turn the key to the "start" position... If you get power to the wire then - then the starter motor is the problem......... if you don't get any reading - then its usually a problem with the ignition unit.. Ignition problems did use to occur with these - but check through as above - and check the connections up to the ignition as well- the connector that is in the loom down from the ignition - sometimes they can give trouble too...

I Sincerely hope I have helped you - Please ask me if you need more help...

Kind Rgds, MIKE

Thanks for the answer. It certainly was useful and gives me further ideas. I will investigate it the way you suggest. However if it is not the starter motor then could you explain a bit more about the "ignition unit". I found something in the manual about an ignition module but have not managed to identify it on the car! If there is any more you can say to explain what I might need to replace in this case it would be much appreciated.

While looking up what you suggested I also came across another idea. Maybe a bit far out but these automatics have a switch which inhibits the ignition if the box is not in neutral or park. I'm wondering if somehow this is doing it and consequently have a few simple checks to do (as well as yours) if it happens again.

Thanks

Alan

Hi again, Thank you for your reply..

Looking at your question backwards... first -the starter inhibitor switch you mention .. that , when it goes wrong , causes non start issues when in Park or Neutral.. or it goes wrong and allows starting in gears - when it shouldn't! It wouldn't/t cause problems such as you describe no..

The ignition unit you are referring to is the Ignition Amplifier - a 7 pin unit ... but no, thats not what I was meaning - that wouldn't cause these problems..

The ignition unit I was referring to is the actual main ignition unit - where you put the ignition key in... When these go wrong - they then don't send power down to the starter motor ... You will be able to test for that as above using the trigger wire ( the smaller one ) as per my previous reply.

If it does turn out to be that - a new ignition barrel / unit would be needed..

I hope that helps you further..

Best Rgds.. MIKE..
