Question

My son is color deficient and cries almost every night because the kids at school make fun of him because he sees colors different. I've tried to find out if schools are required to "handle" this - I picked this specific school as they promised me they would be "on it." But it continues. Please help me.

Sorry, I'm crying - thank you so much for agreeing to help me. I'm so sad that he cries himself to sleep almost every night asking question like "mom, why was I born this way." "I wish I could do life over and be born to be able to see colors they way other people do." "Mom, how come the grass isn't green to me?" "Mom, why are other kids so mean when they know I don't see colors the same as them and they still make fun of me?" "Mom how come my art teacher says 'what's wrong with you?' when he knows I don't see colors like everyone else." I could go on and on with the awful things people have said to him. He sees a therapist and last night when he was crying he said that it will probably take a month of daily sessions to make all of the mean things people have said to him go away. I've tried looking up federal websites to see if there is any federal funding for a teacher to accompany him at school to make sure he is not ridiculed. I can't find anything. I've tried to find if his private school is required to help in some way. I've been unable to find out anything. I think the official medical term is deuteranopia. vischeck.com has a pretty good website that details how he sees colors. He is red/green deficient. There should be some type of federal funding for children with color deficiencies? When I type in "color" almost all sites think I'm researching racial - Thanking you again in advance for your time. Sincerely, Brenda

I am very sorry to learn of your son's circumstances. Who have you discussed this with at the school?

Dear Madam:

Thank you for responding to me. I just woke up - late nights here.

Yes, I have spoken to several of his teachers and they always say "we will definitely watch the situation to make sure it is not an issue." They've also asked me to focus on positive things ask when I pick him up "what good things happened today?"

Thanking you in advance for your time. - Brenda

You need to make an appointment to discuss your concerns with the school principal and demand prompt corrections.

If the principal does not act, then you need to take it to the school superintendent.

If that doesn't work, then you need to go to the school board.

This is not about laws, grants, etc. This is about basic human decency and teaching kids to understand that people are different from each other in many ways and everyone is expected to treat others with respect.

Your son must be told that it's not his fault that others haven't learned some of the important rules....but they will.

Good luck and best wishes! I hope that you find this information to be helpful and this answer to be ACCEPTable!
