Question

I have had a very bad memory for many years now and I am only 30 years old. I forget names after a few seconds of meeting soomeone new, where i left my keys at times.. but most irritating is things i need to do that day and i remeber too late. It has casued me much grief for a while now. Now i am trying to learn Japanese to save my relationship with my partner (She's Japanese) and i find it very difficult becaue i find it takes so long to remember anything and i can see i am slot slower than most of her students also. I have had a past od substance and alcohol abuse and think this has had a great affect on my memory. I no longer do those things and just want to lead a normal life. i want to improve my memory to be reliable and dependable and to acquire more knowledge and study more easily. My question is.. Is it possible to improve my memory after such a past of abuse, and if so what are the things i need to do or concentrate on to improve it. Are there any books or methods to help me?

Answer

It is usually possible to improve your memory, even after drug or alcohol abuse.

There are many techniques available to you, and these include chunking (breaking information down into easier pieces), mnemonics, viusualisation (linking words to an imagined situation – the Spanish word for ironmomgers is ferreteria, so you imagine a ferret running around in the shop. The Roman Room system and number and rhyme are also powerful technigues, and you can read all about them here:

I note that you are particulary interested in language skills –please have a look at this site:

As far as books are concerned, I would recommend the following:

Memory: how we use it, lose it, and can improve it‎

by David Samuel - Science - 1999 - 128 pages

and

Learn to remember: practical techniques and exercises to improve your memory‎

by Dominic O'Brien - Psychology - 2000 - 160 pages
