Question

I have read that the natural antidepressant Serelax has worked well for many women. Actually, the combination of Menersa and Serelax works well. I am on clonazepam and zoloft after experiencing a severe drug reaction to pain meds I was taking for severe neck pain that last 21 days. I would like to wean off of the drugs I am on, especially the clonazepam because of the potential side effects. I now have minor leg aches that have been constant for 2 weeks and my sinuses and head feel like what it feels like when a person has allergies. I exercise 5 times per week, either on the treadmill or with weights and eat fairly well. Do not drink and do not smoke.

Am wondering if anyone has any opinions about Serelax versus Zoloft. I did do zoloft from 1992 until 2008 and did absolutely great on it. Went off late 2008 as i did not think i needed it anymore. Your expert opinion is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Shannon, age 53 from South Dakota.

Optional Information

Gender: Female
Age: 53

Already Tried:
Xanax. Was switched to clonazepam. Am now on Zoloft 50 mg 2 x a day and take .5mg of clonazepam 2 times a day or as needed. Nothing has been the same since I had the bad reaction to pain meds that I took with advil and aleve. Ended up in the ER with a bp of 240/148 I believe when my normal is 120/60. Need some expert advice. Thank you.

Hey Shan,

I need a little clarification before I can give you a good answer..

1. You were on Zoloft before for depression? Were you also on the clonazepam?

2. The severe drug reation treatment at the ER resulted in you being put back on Zoloft and also clonezepam? What was this to accomplish? Was this to be temporary to treat the effects of the drug reaction? What was the drug reaction?

I was on zoloft from 1992 to 2008 for depression; worked great.

I was not on clonazepam.

The drug reaction, I believe, was from the combination of pain meds, advil, and aleve. I was at home resting from the neck pain, and all of a sudden my heart was pounding severely out of my chest. I told my husband we had to go to the hospital now as I thought I was dying. I was shaking severely and my heart rate was 130. I was admitted and they did all the testing that was necessary to determine it was not a heart attack. Their final diagnosis . . . panic attack. After 8 hours, they sent me home with a RX for atavan. I actually felt fine when I left. but now I have episodes of panic that I never had before, even when I suffered my depression from 1984 to 1992 (did not get on the right med (zoloft) until 1992. I'm not sure a normal panic attack would raise one's blood pressure that high.

anyway. really just need to know if you think seralax and other natural meds are better than the zoloft and the clonozapem. Would like to wean off the clonazepam but am afraid of severe withdrawal. I would stay on the zoloft, and then talk to my doc about Seralax. What do you think?

Answer

Thanks, Shan...that did clear up my concerns.

In my many years of counseling, I've seen people try the herbal solutions and natural medications and remedies, and honestly believe the main benefit is the psychological effect of really thinking it will work (placebo). I don't recommend them. Depression cycles with usually very minor ups and downs, and when its lighter people tend to believe the herbal cures are doing a great job. Then when it cycles lower they need to go back on medication, but have lost time to the illness at that point and usually have to go through that whole initial phase of treatment again - relationships suffer, work suffers and the person isn't feeling very happy. I can understand if you don't want what I say to be true - and it may not be for you, but my advice is to stick with the medical solution. I don't think seralax is better than Zoloft and clonazepam.

It sounds like it wasn't just your panic attack that got your blood pressure and pulse up that high, which is why they did a good work-up at the hospital. The interplay of it all did something, and you were able to recover well....very good outcome!

If you want to wean off the clonazepam and/or Zoloft, just call your doctor and ask for a withdrawal plan from it. They'll know how to best reduce your dosage over time in a way that takes your individual health into the picture so that you don't have a complicated withdrawal, or an uncomfortable one. They do this all the time. If you decide to try the natural meds, I most certainly would let your doctor know everything so that they can be well informed about your care. People have been known to not let their doctors know the natural meds they're on because they're afraid they won't approve. You're better to keep everything communicated.

So, long story cut shorter:
I do not recommend natural medicines over zoloft and clonazepam because I've seen little evidence that it works long term.

You won't have severe withdrawal if you go off it slowly, and your doctor is the best one to prescribe that schedule.

Keep them informed on any over the counter meds you're taking.

Good luck, and I hope that you feel much better soon. You clearly have a good grasp on your health, which will take you far!

Thank you Anna. What a wonderful reply. I will communicate with my physician/psychiatrist and see if they concur with my wishes to wean off the clonazepam. I know how herbal remedies and regular prescriptions can cause problems, so I will be very open to everyone on what I am doing. I am hoping the zoloft will do the trick like it did before.

This is a great site and I am glad you took the time to answer my question. Have a great weekend. Shannon

I think you've got a good head on your shoulders and a good action plan. Nothing is better than a good working relationship with your health care providers when you're not up to par, so if you're willing to do your side of it, they can really help you the best.

Thanks for the compliment! Let me know if I can be of further assistance, and please fill out the little feedback form after accepting - it helps me to help you the others behind you.
