Question

My 21 year old son at age 15 or so lost his sexual drive. I though the lack of drive might be related to intensive training - he is a national caliber athlete. He states that he use to have trouble controlled his sexual appetite for females. Know he has extremely low sex drive. He denies any gay ideation. He is extremely troubled by this issue. He tells me he wanted eventually to marry and have children.

He took a month off training without any recovery of sexual appetite. He tried Wellbutrin which was also ineffective. He spent a couple weeks in a tropical area with a female friend. Tried kissing but no spark.

How common is this problem among young males? Any suggestions for treatment? Any literature to read.

Answer

Hello,

First I would suggest that he have a complete work up including a general physical and endocrinoloical exam to rule out any physical problems. This would include a testosterone level as a low testosterone level may account for diminished sex drive. and an examination to ensure that he has enterred puberty. Although late, there are those who are that age and have not yet entyerred puberty. Rare, but it is known to occur. Both over training and inactivity can lead to low testosterone levels. I assume there was no steropid use, although that assumption may be incorrect. Of course we know that the use of anabolic steroids can result in diminished testosterone levels and subsequent lack of sex drive.

It may also be that he is so preoccupied with his sport so that there is no room for anything else, but candidly that is not likely. Because he has no sex drive with girls does not mean he is a homosexual. My advice is that when all the physical exams and blood work is completed, assuming this is a concern to him, I would suggest that he begin a stint of psychotherapy. Depression is also a cause for lack of interest in sex and although many anti-depressants have a negative effect on sexuality (probably the reason welbutrin was used as it of the antidepressantsthat has the least amount of sexual interference. Lack of sexual interest among young males irrespective of their object choice is somewhat rare because of the hormonal levels with males achieving their peak at approximately 18 years of age or there abouts.. As to readings or treatments, before you start to speculate, which can do more damage than good, please wait for the results I mentioned. Then when you are closer to pinninning down the cause there numerous articles on low sex drive, exercise and low sex drive which a Google or Yahoo search will direct you to. Best wishes and good luck. Remember before anything to be considered a manifestation of emotional difficulty, it has toi be problematic or a difficulty for the individual involved. If it is not a physiological problem and it does not bother him, it is again not considered as an emotional problem. Best wishes and good luck.

Sincerly,

Ralph LMHC

Please click green "ACCEPT" button on this page if you are satisfied with my answer so that I get credit for my work. No anabolic steroid used. Has normal male development with normal testosterone levels.

This issue is causing him emotional distress. I do not think he is depressed other than this issue is for him depressing.

Did depression scoring (online, Becks or Hamilton, can't recall) which did not score too depressed.

Hello

As this is causing him emotional distress, I would definitely follow up on my earlier recommendation of psychotherapy. Has he had an endrinological exam?. You mentioned his testosterone level was within normal limits. Does this apply to other hormones including estrogen and thyroid? Although he scored low on the Beck, it is quite possible to be depressed with a non-remarkable score. Here is an address concerning sexual hormone levels and effects:

health.discovery.com/centers/sex/sexpedia/hormone.html

Some males run a higher than normal estrogen level which has a definite negative impact on one's sexual appetite. In that he is bothered by this and despite the Beck score, he may well be experiencing a reactive or exongenous depression, so I would definitely recommend psychotherapy to help work through this issue at this most vulnerable time of life. Here is an address concern reactive or exogenous depression:

www.healthymind.com/depression.html . again, there may be readily available biological answer and solution to this problem and. even though he is 21, it is necessary that you maintain as calm and reassuring posture as possible to help him while he work this through.

Sincerely,

Ralph LMHC

Please click green "ACCEPT" button on this page if you are satisfied with my answer so that I get credit for my work.
