Question

I am installing and 8X7 overhead door and having problems. it is an ideal door from menards with an EZ-SET torsion spring system. I have followed all instrctions and this is not my first time installing an overhead door. This one is new to me beacause you wind up the spring with a drill on the left side and Im sppose to wind it 11 1/4 times. When I get to the 9th turn it starts to open the door and I can't push it back down. If I then try and lift the doo about two thirds the way up the drum stops pulling the cable and the caple gets tangled up. I don't know what I am doing wrong. Any help would be great. Thanks

Hi and thanks for using JustAnswer.com.

You can clamp visegrips to the door track to prevent the rollers from rising. However this means maximum tension on the spring will develop while your working on it. I prefer doing it with the door up almost all the way. When the bottom panel has it's top rollers on the horozonal track, and it's bottom rollers on the vertical track, it leans away from the spring enough to get to it. Much less tension in that position. Clamp the door in that position, tension the spring and lock it, then wind the liftwire onto the spools and tighten the spools setscrews. Then release your lock on the spring. I'm surprised that a drill could tension the spring. I have a milwakee right angle drill that develops tremendous torque, and I believe a fully tensioned garage door spring would bring it to a halt!

I hope that this information was helpful to you. I tried that and the bracket on the door bent there was so much preassure on it. Didn't try the lifting the door method yet because of how heavy it is and the cables tangle eveyrtime I lift the door. I have followed all the instructions word for word and have never had this much of a problem. Its almost like something is backwards but I don't think anything is. Any ideas? Thanks

Bent the bracket? This is way too much force! Perhaps you have a spring for a heavy wooden door and are using a light aluminum door. Springs are usually color coded. Check with the manufacturer to see which spring you have. Your kit could have been boxed on a Monday morning by a hung over, minimum wage, non English speaking, ManPower labor rental; who put the wrong label on the box. Or by a disgrunteld employee, or one who thought it would be funny to see you struggle. What you have described is NOT RIGHT.

I hope that this information was helpful to you.
