Question

We were driving home and didn't see what exactly had happened but a pigeon hit a car. We pulled over and the bird was limping and falling over. there wasn't any blood but one of it's wings is a bit wonky. We have put a towel round it, put it in a carrier and put some browm bread soaked in water in with it. There is a heater on too. It's making a "hissing" sound when you go near it and it seems like it is moving to try to get out. Should we just release it? Or what else should we do? It also looks like it has bought from either end this bright green sludge too.

Answer

Hi,

Thanks for your question and for trying to help this bird.

You are doing the right thing by keeping it in a quiet, warmer area. I doubt it will eat much since I'm sure it is stressed.

The best thing to do would be to contact a wildlife rehabber. These are people who have licenses to keep and work with wildlife. THey can observe and treat the bird as needed. If he does have head trauma, they do need supportive care for a few days.

You can search here - http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.htm

I hope he does okay, if you need anything, please let me know.

Thanks for your help. Only problem is that we are in the UK so the link won't really help! Do you have any idea what the green sludgey stuff could be? It has gone very quiet now but hisses a bit when you go near it but this is probably because it is shocked and frightened. Also, do you think we should keep it over night? I am now going to try to find a number for a wildlife rehabber. Many thanks again

Info Request

Hi,

Is the 'green stuff' something on the bird or is it's droppings? I see if I can find some listings for the UK. What part do you live in?

I am in England, in Buckinghamshire, between the south of England and London. Thanks for looking for more listings, I do appreciate it!

I'm not sure which end the green stuff is coming out of the bird but it'd beak is clean so I'm pretty sure it is it's droppings. But it doesn't look like like it's mixed with "normal" droppings.

Thanks

Hi,

If he hasn't eaten in a while, his droppings will most likely look kind of dark green, maybe even a bit tarry looking.   You should also see a bit of white also. They may be a bit stuck to his bottom also.

If you can get some, you can offer a small amount of wild bird seed or cracked corn. Again, he may not eat it, but it is worth a try. Try to keep the carrier or box in a warm, dark, quiet area to try and minimize as mucs stress as you can.

Here are some listings for some - I don't know where they are in relation to you, but they might have other contacts they can refer you to also so it would be worth a call.

Please let me know what else I can do. Again, thanks for trying to help.
