Question

hello,
I have a pitbull/mastiff mix named Charlie & i just recently moved in with my girlfriend & she has 2 puppies, ever since i moved here about 2 weeks ago my dog stopped eating his food & now all he wants to eat is their puppy food, ever since he tasted it, which he only can snag like a bite or two until i stop him. But now he is hooked & has lost about 15 lbs of weight and completely refuses to eat his food unless i literally lock him in a room for hours until he eats, but than he throws it all up. This has been happening for days please help because i dont know what to do & i am very worried about my dog & the vet told me he is fine just mal nourished, but i already realize this.. nobody can help :(

Hi Jason,

Is your dog throwing up the puppy food or is he throwing up his own food?

Is it the same you have been feeding him all along?

Do you ever add moist food to it or is it moist food that he gets daily?

Does he trow up undigested food or is the food digested?

How much longer will the puppies be on puppy food?

im sorry about that, anyways..
charlie is throwing up his own food when he eats it now, ever since i moved here, i have been trying to keep him and the puppies separate when i feed them but all he wants is their food since he has tasted it, And all they want is his adult dog food which is not good for either of them. None of the dogs are getting what they need nutritionally, And now he has been starving himself unless i literally lock him in a room with just his food, so he only picks at it and vomits the little bit he does eat.
I have not changed his diet because since he was a puppy, he gets the poops when he eats wet food or people food, so i feed him dry dog food, & i have never had this problem before, he is very stubborn sometimes & it will take him days to eat a full bowl now when he used to eat two full bowls a day, thats why he's losing the weight which is not good.. he is a solid dog & weighs 85-90 lbs but he has lost like 15 lbs in 2 weeks, i am very worried.
The food he throws up is undigested still in its origional form, mixed with stomach bile.
As for the puppies, they are 3 months old & will be on puppy food for a while yet.

Answer

Thank you for that information, now it seems we have both posted at the same time!

First the dog vomiting after eating. This could be because he is eating the pups food or because he is eating his food too fast , or there is something wrong health wise that is causing this. Much will depend on how long he has been vomiting, IF it has only been a short while it may be from an obstruction of the bowel from something he ate that he should not have such as a bone, toy, raw hide, pig ear etc. So if the vomiting continues after you have kept him away from the puppy food then he should be examined. If he is eating or drinking too fast then this can cause vomiting but you would normally see this happen pretty quickly after he ate, not four hours later.

It maybe helpful to add a little warmed chicken broth as be enticing to a dog also and it should not upset the stomach too much, as well some boiled chicken which is used for dogs when they have upset stomachs.

If vomiting continues then I would be more worried this is a health problem such as an obstruction and would bring him back to your vet for exam or get a second opinion.

yes this has been going on for about a week- I was wondering how long would the vomitting continue IF it were an obstruction of his bowels. Also, what are some other symptoms that may help me further diagnose him. I've been to the vet, as I said earlier, and would prefer not to take him again until I know for sure.
If you were to estimate a time duration for weightloss, what would you guess? Is 15 lbs in a week an acceptable weightloss for a dog with an obstruction of bowels?
Thank you.

Answer

!5 lbs is a lot but if he is not able to hold anything down then I can see it happening especially if you are feeding him more than once a day. An obstruction would continue until the item causing the obstruction was taken out surgically, it will not go away on its own so if you know that he may have eaten a non food item then it's time for an x ray and sometimes even the stuffing from a toy does not show up on an x ray and they still have to go in surgically to look around.

Other symptoms may be a change in stool or stool habits and lethargy. Eventually anything he eats or drinks would not be able to stay down.
