Question

I have a computer that used to be part of an intranet. Now I am using it as a stand alone.
When I start the computer up, I can not get past the user name and password anymore.
How do I eliminate the need for a password all together since we are just using it at home and do not need the password function? How can I get around the username/password window and get my computer "opened"?

Okay ...does a classic logon window come up with the username and password fields, or the Windows XP logon screen?

I believe it is the classic logon window. It just asks for user name and password, it does not have a window for domain.

I am using a PC at work, while my wife is at home waiting for the "fix". I did go into a window to change the domain from the old intranet to a new workgroup name when this problem occured. Did I really screw it up?

Thanks ...now, please type in administrator in the username field and leave the password field blank; does it log you in?

Yes, but how do we get the stuff that had been saved on the other desktop under "debbie"?

Posted by B. Rath 65 days and 1 hours ago.

Answer

Great ...now, please go to Start > Run, and type in control userpasswords2 in the dialog box that comes up.
In the 'User Accounts' window that comes up, highlight your own user account, i.e. Debbie, and click the 'Reset Password...' option at bottom; leave both of the password fields blank when prompted ..and click 'Ok'.
Restart your system normally now and check if you can login to your account all right thereafter, leaving the password field blank.

We can get into the computer now but when we open (using debbie and password left blank) we do not have the original desktop with all the documents and shortcuts of debbie's original desktop.

Okay ...in the User Accounts panel which came up earlier, how many use accounts were listed?

there was;

administrator

aspnet

debbie (as "power user")

(but only because we "added" that last time because it was not there)

We redid the whole "control userpasswords2" sequence, when we start it up we still do not get the original desktop.

Hmm ..that's certainly strange; now, please navigate to the following location:
C:\Documents and Settings\debbie\

Check the 'Documents' and 'Desktop' folder, and let me know what you get.

We can not get to the "Docments" or "Desktop" folders, when we type in C:\Documents and Settings\debbie\" it goes to the internet and gives a bunch of pop ups and says "can not connect" box comes up

You have to click on Start > My Computer, then navigate to the location accordingly.

Let me know.

There is no "Documents" folder. There is a "Desktop" folder that looks like it has everything that used to show up on "debbie" desktop.

Info Request

There should be a 'My Documents' folder present as well ...could you cross-check, and let me know?

Reply

No, there is no "My Documents" folder. There is a "Desktop" folder

Info Request

Okay ...now, please go to Start > Control Panel > Appearance and Themes > Folder Options, then click on the 'View' tab and enable the 'Show hidden files and folders' option. Done that, check in the \Documents and Settings\debbie\ folder if you can see the 'My Documents' folder now.

There is a "My Recent Documents" folder but not just a "My Documents" folder.

Info Request

Okay ...now, please go to Start > Search, and carry out a computer search for 'My Documents'; let me know what you find.

There are 6 total "My Documents" folders in various locations in C: , one of which is C:\Documents and Settings\debbie\Desktop\Debbie

and 5 others

Posted by B. Rath 65 days ago.

Info Request

Okay ...please check the contents of each; does any of them have the info that was present earlier?

Regards

Reply

A couple of them have some stuff, not everything, but mostly include stuff that had recently been deleted when "cleaning up" the original debbie desktop a few days ago.

Accepted Answer

Okay ...now, please go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore, then restore your system back to a date and time when the account was fine, with all of its data and settings fine.

Done that, restart and check how it goes for you.
