Question

I have two furnace quotes to consider.
1. Comfortmaker VS 95, 2 stage, 10 year no hassle parts and labour, stainless heat exchanger life time 10 year labour, includes electronic thermostat, 3" vent and supply.

2. Bryant 90i, 2 stage, 10 year parts 5 year labour, Everlastic secondary heat exchanger Lifetime part 20 year labour, includes Evolution thermostat. 1 1/2" vent and supply.

The Comfortmaker is about $600.00 cheaper installed. The Bryant installer showed me their chart that specifies 1 1/2 vent and supply is correct for this model and that over sizing will cause problems with the pressure differential switch.

Any ideas which one is better?

Answer

I may be a bit partial just due to the service history I have seen on these units, but the Bryant would be my choice by far. I will also say it is just as important to pick the right installer. A 20 year warranty is not really an asset if the company is gone or perform poor service. I have 20+ years as a hands on tech and the Bryant would be what I would choose.

Thank you for your quick reply.

Last questions.

What would you say the percentage increased failure rate on the Comfortmaker is?

Would you be more partial to the stainless heat exchanger or the Everlastic?

The better warranty on the Comfortmaker (10 year parts and labour) is certainly interesting but of course no good if they go out of business. I see that they are both owned by United Technologies and I have read that the Bryant is a Carrier with different stickers on it.

Both installers small local companies and are reputable, There is one more quote to come in from a large company that is probably going to come in at about $1500.00 more for a comparable Goodman furnace.

Thanks again for your help

Jim

Accepted Answer

You are correct about clones like Carrier, Bryant Payne etc. The difference is exchanger and gauge of metals . The Everlastic intrigues me over the stainless. I can tell you that given your third choice is not going to compare in price or quality. Goodman is great for when budget is restrained, rental property etc.
