Answer

Hi XXXXXXXXXXXX and welcome to JustAnswer

Unfortunately to fix this on an OEM installation (ie Dell) you would need to use the Recovery Disks or the Dell Recovery Partition. This would mean losing your data. If you have important data then a local computer repair store can recover the data before you do the recovery.

To recover from the recovery partition when the Dell screen appears at bootup press and hold the Ctrl key on the keyboard and press the F11 key, then release them both at the same time.
The Dell Restore by Symantec window appears.
Click the Restore button.
A caution message appears advising that all data will be lost.
Click the Confirm button.
The Progress window appears. Once the process is begun, Dell PC Restore usually takes only 8 to 10 minutes to complete.
When the restore is complete, the message The system recovery process was successful appears.
Click the Finish button and the computer will restart.

Answer

Sorry the Inspiron 910 doesn't support the F11 features. Do you have the Recovery Disks?

hi there

would recovery disks be automatically included in package when purchased?

I'm thinking the answer is sadly no. Could you give me advice as to how to proceed and whether or not it would be expensive!

many thanks - sorry for the delay in replying - your message had gone into my spam folder for some naughty reason!

Answer

Recovery disks should be included although you can request them if they weren't delivered.

Answer

No like I already mentioned the F11 features are not supported on the 910 model. Recovery would need to be done using the Dell Operating System disk and Dell Driver disk.

For this you would need an external CD/DVD Rom drive or copy the recovery disks to a bootable USB external drive (flash drive) and boot from that.

There is also a rather complex way to solve the problem courtesy of Microsoft. Dell support pages do suggest this method however Microsoft warn against as it creates users and passwords on OEM installs which were not previously used, effectively locking you out unable to complete the repair steps. Where I have seen several Dell customers fix the problem using recovery disks, I have been unable to source any who used the Microsoft method.

Dell support may be able to walk you through a repair or if you are still under warranty they may ask you to send the laptop in for repair.
