Question

I have a 17 year old collie mix.
At the last visit dr. said she has a tumor near her anus.
She also has a staph infection and has been on antibiotics for 20 days, it's better but still there.
She is anxious and crying a bit and going to the doggie door to go outside, stands there and comes in and repeats the process over and over.
What could her problem be? Should she be on more antibiotics?

Answer

If there is a mass near the anus, that may be causing her discomfort. In my practice I have a CO2 surgical laser, which makes treatment of these tumors much faster, less painful and less tissue has to be removed. If that is the problem, then ask your vet about laser surgery for this.

What if my dr. doesn't have this tool? How much money might it cost?

I am very worried about her continued patches, that the dr. said was staph.

Accepted Answer

It is very bloody to remove tumors near the rectum, so it may take a while to do. You would need to talk to your vet to see if it needs to come off and what they would charge. In my practice, it would be anywhere from $350 to $500. If there is a Staph infection, it may take a long timme to finally go away with antibiotics. But you also need to bathe the dog's skin with either a chlorhexidine or benzoyl peroxide shampoo. YOur vet will have one of these.
