Question
I don't know why I thought of this today. My mother died last year at 101. I worked hard all of my life and was pretty successful at working through childhood problems. My mother smothered or drowned kittens in the 40s and early 50s, ostensibly as population control. She loved the mother cat. Don't know why she didn't hide it from me better. When I mentioned to people later in life, they said that wasn't so unusual on a farm if too many were born. She got in trouble as a teacher for flushing mouse babies down a toilet in the presence of a second grade student. Past of my early problems included anxiety problems - surprised?

Oh, I've been to therapy since I entered college. Had other issues with home, secrets kept for over a decade, but I have worked through those pretty well. It was just ironic that I was her care-taker, but suffice it to say she did not protect me when I was young, 6 or 7.

Good Evening,
It is not unusual for memories to resurface in our mind. With this, come the pleasant as well as unpleasant ones.
You are reporting that you have had counseling to address various issues.
Family members can cause a lot of heartache at times. When you were growing up, from what you've mentioned, your mom had a cruel streak in her and perhaps that is why she failed to protect you. Even though people may do things on farms to control overpopulation of certain animals including vermin, I never believe that cruelty is the answer. Unfortunately, people as higher animals feel that they can do a lot of things to other beings.
Perhaps the recollection of your mother's past actions and live also brings underlying longing to have had positive experiences with her while she was alive. Afterall, what a long life she has had and given the opportunity by nature to use her life in different ways (yet, people decide what to do with their lives and how to act)
