Question

I take suboxone. I am down to 2mgs per day from 32mgs 2 months ago. I wasn't thinking today and just threw it in my mouth and swallowed it. This probably won't help at all will it. The withdrawel is pretty strong right now and I can't afford to be wasting them. I probably should take another the right way or will the one I swallowed do anything for me. Thanks

I had surgery on my right knee exactly 2 years ago 9/13/07. My knee was worse than ever. I was left on Vicodin then Norco then Percocet. After 16 months of this my Dr informed me I was dependent on opiates. He acted like it was my fault. I am waiting to get total joint replacement. This has been hell. I had to take early retirement. My family has lost all respect for me.I had the same job for 42yrs had an accident at work.My employer treated me like a used up piece of equipment.

For the last 3 months my Dr has had me at 4mgs per day. After learning more about this medication I decided to get off completely. For about a month I was taking 3mgs. Then about 2 weeks ago I started taking 2mgs a day. My withdrawel symptoms are anxiety, jitterieness, weakness, fatigue, insomnia. I originally started at 4mgs per day.(1/6/09) Then after a week was raised to 30mgs per day and was raised to 32mgs a day. I stayed at this level for at least 4 months. The more I learned I became convinced that I wanted OFF this stuff. It was doing nothing for my pain despite the fact my Dr. said I was kidding myself. He worked with me until I got to 4mgs and plans to keep me on it until my surgery is approved. I am terrified that I will have total joint replacement and there will be nothing that will help relieve the pain after surgery. They treat me like an addict which I am thanks to them. I was kept on some sort of narcotic pain medication daily for 16 months.(last surgery 9/13/07). Thanks XXXXXXXXXXXX

Answer

Dear XXXXXXXXXXXX,

Thank you for the information,

Its good to hear that you are slowly tapering the dose of the suboxone. The daily dose of 2mg per day is not high enough and you may take it off also slowly over a period of time. You do need to tell the doctor/surgeon that you are on this opioid analgesic for so long and now tapering it off.

The surgery may be done and is not a relative contraindication. You may even continue to take it for much longer time if your craving is severe and symptoms are not controlled.

Just referring me to the company website is how I got into trouble with this crap in the first place. I actually believed their propaganda . It's the Drs.that are talked into pushing this stuff to take the easy eay out.

Answer

Dear chuck,

Thank you for the enquiry,

The drug suboxone or any brand may be taken to control the symptoms of opioid withdrawl as you already know.

The slowly tapering is advised if possible though it may take a few months before you completely stop it.

Let me know if you have any doubt.

Thank you!

I have no doubt. Ijust feel I was misled when my dose was raised to 32mgs and told it would help my pain . It just prolonged the withdrawel.
Our American medical system "you just cant beat it". Right?

Answer

Dear chuck,

Thank you for the enquiry,

The suboxone is an opioid itself and may help in the control of pain.Though it is approved by the FDA for the treatment of opioid dependence only .

I asked a very simple question that required a simple answer. You obviously weren't listening. Here it is a number of days later going back and forth. Do you even know the correct way to take suboxone? I guess not. I did my own research and found out that if you swallow the pill it will have no effect. They must be disolved under the tongue in order to get into your bloodstream. I took another 2mgs and managed to get trrough the day. By the way I am down to 1mg a day today is my 4th day. This really sucks. XXXXXXXXXXXX

PS I am tired of being treated like a drug seeking pill addict. I followed my Drs instructions. That was my biggest mistake. Please don't bother me with any more of your doctorspeak.
