Question

SInce 2006 I have had debilitating anxiety. First, I couldn't sleep. Now I take 1.5 mg of Xanax to sleep. Buit I still had daytime anxiety, so I started taking 50mg of Pristiq. I still have anxiety attacks, and I don't like the effects of these meds. I was a compulsive overeater who had lap band surgery in 2006. Same year, my mother got dementia, my son got into drugs, I started menopause and I started working full time again as a trial attorney. Now the anxiety is spreading into every area, including my relationship with my fiance. How can I stop the atacks and get off these drugs?

Hi there ,

Welcome to Just answer !

Well, wanting to be free from anxiety and stopping the drugs at the same time , this is not possible because of medications along with psychotherapy is very important to control anxiety and once you are free from anxiety , then you shall come off the medications .

So, kindly mention the drugs which you are currently placed upon and what all therapies you have had so far , so that i can suggest you an apt treatment regime , which shall bring you respite from anxiety and after which you can stop your drug as well.

I am currently talking 1.5 mg of extended release Xanax before bed and 50 mg. of Pristiq daily. I have had some therapy but none specifically to address the anxiety symptoms. It seems we try to determine what issues are causing it and talk about those. However at this point I am having anxiety attacks in the daytime even with the medications.

Thanks for the reply ..

Well, if you are sill having panic attacks despite being placed on 1 anti depressant such as pristiq ( desvenlafaxine ) and 1 anti anxiety drug such as xanax , it is sugestive that you have developed increased tolerance against these drugs meaning that your body has become reisistant against these drugs , so this warrants a change in your current regime .

I suggest that instead of pristiq , you ask your doctor to start you on Paxil CR or Prozac , which are better in treating anxiety attacks ,so any one of these two anti depressants shall be chosen and started , while continiuing on Xanax .

And along with this drug change i suggest that you should start seeking psychotherapy ,that is counseling from a psychologist , and the best type of psychotherapy for treating anxiety attacks is Conitive behavioural therapy ( CBT ).

So, combination of CBT with drug therapy comprising of xanax and paxil cr or prozac will see you through anxiety attacks , plus CBT will help you to develop techniques and mental exercises which will help you in dealing with stressful situations and coping with them in a better way.

I hope this helps..

I wish you all the best..
