Question

I have been taking .5 mg of Ativan 2xday as well as 100 mg neruontin 3xday for the past 6 or 7 weeks following a traumatic fall in which, according to an MRI of my cervical spine and head resulted in most of the vertebrae sustaining bulging discs. Before taking the ativan I had terrifying nerve burning, twinging, prickling, randomly around my body as well as at the injury site. I am hoping to get an MRI of my thoracic spine as that is where the impact was I believe and have always felt damage there as well as in my neck- I am a dancer/choreographer so am very in touch with my body and in need of it to heal as carefully as possible. I am trying to cut back on the ativan- on good days I have cut back to one/day for four days in a row...and then I tried to do some exercises or lifted a pan and the pain is back. It is ativan that relieves the pain and weird nerve twinges and pricklings all over my body from face and top of head down to soles of feet. SInce I have changed jobs and cities, I am in the middle of getting new doctors and so have seen no one for over a month. The QUESTION: How "dangerous" is it to continue with the Ativan as such a low dose? Some people are so extreme on the dangers of ativan, others not. Too bad it is addictive as it helps me so much with no side effects. The neurontin is okay, but not as good as makes me sleepy. I still can not do anything that involves lifting more than a water bottle, pulling/pushing, keeping my head turned, doing any exercises with head or with traction( ie hanging over, hingeing from the waist) which all feel fabulous at the moment and then a few hours later the pain kicks in and is very scary.

Hi there ,

Welcome to Just answer !

Well, as of now you have been placed on ativan 0.5 mg two times a day that makes it 1 mg / day of aivan , this is fairly a moderate dose , and although benzodiazepines including ativan are to be continued only for a short period say 2-3 months , and have the potential for abuse and addiction, but looking at the moderate dose that you are taking , plus the fact that it brings relief to your painful condition , so i suggest that there is no harm in using ativan in the present dose of 1 mg/ day for some more time till you find a solution to your back pain , and i believe that there is no need for you to get all apprhensive about being addicted to ativan , as first of all you have not been on the drug for too long a period , plus secondly the dose of the ativan is only a moderate dose from which withdawal can be easy and less taxing .

So, contiue on ativan in the present dose , without any apprehension , and consult a neurologist for your pain.

I hope this helps..

I wish you all the best..
