Question

Hello, my dog has not been eating for two days, and we recently discovered that when we pet his back, he would drop into a sitting position. It clearly is painful to him. He seems to be low on energy and lacks enthusiasim. I took him to the vet earlier today and paid $350 for x-rays with no diagnoses. I was given antibiotics and sent on our way. Well the pain has spread to the neck area, and I have discovered blood. I shaved the area to get a better look, to find what look to be blood blisters all over his back. I am freaking out right about now. He is a 4 year old lab. Can anyone clue me in to what this may be?

We have been to the vet, thinking that it might be a spinal issue or possibly a bight or a sting. X-rays came up negative. I have recently found sores all over his back and they seem to be spreading

Hi XXXXXXXXX,

It sounds like what you are describing in a severe skin infection. It almost sounds like it could be a spider bite reaction. I have seen dogs that have been bitten get a horrible infection that spreads down the back.

Hopefully the antibiotic you got will take care of the infection. Can you tell me which one he was prescribed?

Hello Dr Hinson, Thank you for your reply. The antibiotic is called Cephalexin. My wife just discovered a lump near his tail on his back, which is almost certainly the host of what ever is wrong. If it is a spider bite, do you believe that the cephalexin will do the trick, and do you have any other remedies that we might try?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the Cephalexin should definitely take care of the problem. I don't know how many capsules they gave you but he should be on it a minimum of three weeks. With any severe skin infection they should be on antibiotics for atleast one week after all the skin is cleared up. If you stop it too soon the infection will likely come back.

I would not apply anything topically unless your vet prescribed it. It will look scabby and crusty but that is normal healing and the scabs and crusts will fall off when ready.

Does he seem less painful now? Has his energy level increased? Is he eating OK?

Dr. Hinson
