Answer

Hi and thanks for using JustAnswer.com.

Sounds like you are questioning an advertising slogan. Plain old SodiumHypoChlorate kills algae and mildew. You probably know it by it's laymen's term- Bleach. The best concentration is sold by pool supply companies- it is twice the concentration of your wifes laundry bleach. If you had 3 products containing 15, 25, and 50 percent, you could say that the 50 percent concentration is the best product based on the fact that it is the bleach that is the active ingredient. If you had a product that applied by a Windex type bottle hand squeeze pump, and another applied by hose sprayer, you could call the hose sprayer product best, based on ease of application. The adjective BEST is meaningless without some basis of comparison and something to compare to.People who toss out the word BEST without giving any reference of comparison, generally have no idea what they are talking about.

I hope that this information was helpful to you. One final question please- will this remove the algae over time as many brand products advertise? I actually tried a household strength bleach without any obvious results (of course based on your original response this may have been too weak). And last, are reapplications for heavy stains common?

Accepted Answer

I know of no product, other than paints, that does not wash off in rain. Use a pump tank sprayer to soak the algae and mildew. Work in 6 foot squares. Spray again and bristle brush the heavy growth. Rinse off the mess with a garden hose with a spray attachment. Repeat until the entire roof is clean. If you have a pressure washer, angle the spray down the roof NOT UP under the tile lips and use it instead of a garden hose.
