Question
We are planning to relocate from Switzerland to Mumbai, India. We have a 6 year old male Siberian Huskie dog who was born and raised in Switzerland. We cannot decide whether we should take him to India or give him for adoption in Switzerland. To leave him behind, even with a loving family, would be emotionally wrenching for us. On the other hand, the hot, humid and overcrowded city of Mumbai may be physically traumatic for the dog. We also do not know whether leaving him behind would be psychologically damagng for the dog. What would you advise ?

Hello. Thanks for your question. It is never an easy decision for what is best for a dog as far as a long-distance relocation. It is obvious you love your boy very much and only want what is best for him. I do have good news for you! Though the Siberian Husky has a thick double coat due to its origins in the cold climate, his coat's structure also repells heat in the summer. Like most dog breeds, their coats are tailored to insulate their body temperature to adjust to heat and cold. (Just the same as it being not recommended to shave a dog down too close to the skin because it will actually make them hotter in the summer and can cause sunburn.) The Husky breed is flexible enough to live anywhere; even in warmer climates. There are different grooming style cuts you can opt to give him, too, but as I stated, don't cut or shave too much off as his coat will insulate him from heat. As far as the overcrowded city situation, any living or atmosphere that is suitable for you will be fine for your boy too. As long as he has room to exercise and play, I think you will have no problems taking your guy with you. It will make your already stressfull move easier for your family and you won't add the pressures and emotional strain of leaving a family member behind. I wish you all the best in your new location. I hope this information has helped you and gives you the piece of mind and insight you were seeking. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.
