Answer

Hi Hyacinth,

I can understand your concern. At age 50, it is likely that you are perimenopausal. It is not unusual to have irregular periods and skip periods for several months. Then, when you do have a period, it may be heavy and you may have clots.

If you see tissue or membranes, then it is more likely to be a miscarriage, but I suspect, from what you are describing, that you are passing clots from a period.

What I would do is treat this as a period for now. If you see tissue or membranes, re-develop a fever or develop increasing pain, then you will have to see your doctor because you will need further treatment.

If you have any other questions, let me know.
Take care,

Hyacinth,

It is difficult to tell, because when we shed the lining of our uterus, we are shedding tissue. It is not very common for women to get pregnant at age 50 (although it is possible).

It is more likely that it is a period than it is a miscarriage, but I cannot tell you 100% it isn't.

If you are feeling ok, no fever and you are having normal period cramps, I would treat this as a period. If the bleeding becomes heavy, you develop fever, severe pain or you see membrane type tissue then see your doctor.
