Question

My daughter just discovered her bunny has flystrike. She said there is a 2 inch long wound down near his rear and there are maggots all over him. She can't afford a vet and it's night time. She says there are hundreds on him and they can't get them all off. What can I tell her to do?

Accepted Answer

A fine comb as she has found can help.

The areas she can see a wound she can fllush with full-strength betadine iodine solution to help get the maggots out.

A sports bottle with iodine solution mixed with water can be used to flush the wound area.

This site shows how bad it can be.

You can use tweezers to remove maggots and drop them in a jar of water and detergent solution or water and betadine iodine to keep them from crawling away.

Its horrible, it takes time, but the best option is picking off all the maggots she can.
